Merry Mullins named Georgia's Elementary Art Educator of the Year!
A HUGE congratulations to Merry Mullins who was recently named, "Georgia's Elementary Art Educator of the Year!"  We interviewed Merry about this exciting accomplishment and here's what she shared:

----------------------------------------------------

How did it feel to be selected as the Georgia's Elementary Art Educator of the Year?  I was SO excited when I found out that I was nominated for this award in May by my county supervisor, I thought the nomination alone was exciting.   When I received the e-mail in August saying that I won, it felt like a dream.  I'm receiving the actual award next weekend at the Georgia Art Teachers Convention in Augusta.

Who or what inspires you? That is such a hard question to answer.  My inspiration comes from my family, colleagues and my students...depends on the subject and the day.

Why is art education important for our students?  I believe that the art experience helps children learn to see more, sense more, recall more, and they become more vitally aware of their changing and expanding environment.  We refer to the Design Process on a regular basis so children know it's okay to figure out new ways and solutions for problem solving.  Consequently, they are able to express their ideas visually with a growing confidence.  I try my best to learn the names of all of my students (700+) because I want them to feel comfortable and valued when they are with me.

What is your favorite thing about teaching art at King Springs?  My husband and I are both Smyrna natives and I think it's neat that I teach at the elementary school that he went to (many years ago).  We are also active members at our church and in our community.  I LOVE getting to see my students when we are out and about in different environments outside of school.

Is there an art lesson you would love to do with KSE students? (Dream big!)  I am so blessed here at KSE with a generous PTA, Foundation and Art Fundraiser that we get to do everything that I dream up.

What is one thing people don't know about you (a "fun fact")?   My jaw is "bionic" (lol) it has 7 plates and 36 screws in it.  It was a last resort surgery for Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea a few years ago.
