Ed-SPLOST V Implementation Meeting Recap
Cobb County representatives joined members of the Smyrna community on Wednesday evening to discuss the implementation of Ed-SPLOST V.  Ed-SPLOST V, a referendum approved in March 2017, will generate funding to provide King Springs Elementary with a new school building, among other Cobb County School District projects.

Attendees at the Ed-SPLOST V Implementation Meeting, hosted by Wave of Excellence at Griffin Middle School, included:
  • Susan Thayer, CCSD Board Member (Post 2);
  • Christian Suttle, Assistant Superintendent CCSD Elementary Schools;
  • Dr. Robert Downs, Assistant Superintendent CCSD Middle Schools;
  • Ed Wagner, Assistant Superintendent CCSD High Schools;
  • John Adams, Deputy Superintendent, Office of HR & Operations;
  • Nick Parker, Senior Executive Director of SPLOST for CCSD; and
  • James Wilson, Education Planners LLC Founder and Cobb Consultant on SPLOST.
While Ed-SPLOST V funds are not scheduled to be collected (or spent) until January 2019, KSE families are anxious to see relief from overcrowding and steps toward the construction of a new KSE building.

Addressing these concerns, the speakers discussed the possibility of accessing future Ed-SPLOST V funds soon to get the ball rolling on Ed-SPLOST V projects.  For example, the speakers discussed the possibility of borrowing money from the General Fund (subject to Board approval) to hire architects in advance of the January 2019 Ed-SPLOST V effective date.

What is still not clear is the priority of projects, including when KSE will be in queue for its new building.  However, Cobb representatives indicated that the priority of projects would be made publicly known in the coming months and acknowledged the community's concerns regarding local school needs in the face of population growth.  King Springs was specifically mentioned as a known priority.

The entire meeting can be viewed here.  For more information on Ed-SPLOST V, visit the District's SPLOST webpage

Special thanks to our fabulous administration and many KSE supporters for turning out for this event.  And extra special thanks to Wave of Excellence for bringing this type of meaningful event to the community!
