News You Should Know: CCSD School Board is finalizing plans for Campbell High construction
As you know, SPLOST 5 is funding the King Springs rebuild. SPLOST 5 will also fund major construction at Campbell High School, and the CCSD School Board is currently deciding what that construction will look like. The Board's decisions now will determine what facilities are available at CHS when our kids are high school age.

One of the primary concerns is that Campbell HS is over capacity by hundreds of students. Proposals for how to address that overcrowding have been controversial and have stirred significant debate. The King Springs PTA thought we should bring this discussion to our parents' attention.

In a nutshell, there are two things about the CHS plans that every KSE parent should know. First, the district has asserted that Campbell's overcrowding problem may resolve itself because enrollment will level off over coming years: according to the district's latest projections, growth in our area is slowing. (At a recent town hall meeting on the project, several Smyrna parents expressed disbelief at this projection.) The Board is due to receive an updated projection at its next meeting in May.

Second, during a recent Board discussion, one school board member proposed that Campbell HS's overcrowding could be fixed by moving the IB program to another school in the county.

There are certainly other issues in the SPLOST 5 discussion that merit attention, but these are two of the biggest and most controversial. A good resource for more information is the Campbell High School Council, which is following the discussions closely and shares information regularly in the Wave of Excellence Facebook group.

If you have concerns about the plans for Campbell HS or for other SPLOST 5 projects, you might consider emailing or calling our school board members. Their contact information is listed on the CCSD website. You might also consider attending the next school board work session or public meeting, which are scheduled for Thursday, May 16. Public comment is available during the work session, which starts at 2:30pm, and during the board meeting, which starts at 7pm. (Public comment spots are limited, so speakers need to arrive early to sign up.) Board meetings are also streamed live on the CCSD website, so you can watch the meeting even if you cannot attend.
